Writing News!

Just wanted to let you all know I am alive and well. I've had a couple of scary but not-so serious illnesses that kept me offline more than I usually am. I am playing catch up with many things right now, and blogging is one of them. 

But we have news about writing! Blog correspondent and all around good guy Lee Houston Jr. had a brand new book out! Hugh Monn Private Detective: Catch A Rising Star is a full length novel adventure featuring the far-flung future's favorite investigator. This one comes out of the starting gate with yet another fantastic piece of cover art by the uber-talented Mr. David Russell but what's inside the cover is just as much of a treat. Trust me, you don't want to miss out on this!

Of course Lee's first Hugh Monn book, with the collection of short stories, is also still available in just about all the same outlets, if you have some catching up to do. And then, if you're of a mind to hear the stories actually narrated to you in the most dramatic fashion, there is now an audiobook collection of the first Hugh Monn book, well over 7 hours of listening fun. Like the book, it sports another cover by David Russell, this one was a Pulp Ark award winner.

And how could I not be, with a brand new grandson due in about a month? Plus I should have a book or two of my own out sometime before the end of the year, as well as some short stories in various places. 

2013 sure is flying by with all that is going on!

Lee Houston Jr's PROJECT: ALPHA book gets some love!

You have no idea how happy this makes me for one of our own here at In My Spare Time...

Lee's book PROJECT: ALPHA, the seminal tale of a superhero-in-the-making, got some well deserved love from none other than the celebrated new pulp author of The Rook and Lazarus Gray, Mr. Barry Reese. On his website today, Barry picked his favorite new pulp books of 2012, and PROJECT: ALPHA was one of seven. That says an awful lot about the quality of this novel, because it was in there with some hard-hitting company. Way to go Lee!

So Nancy, Have You Written Anything Interesting Lately????

Actually, yeah I have. Glad you asked! LOL

I have a couple of recent things out that may catch your fancy. 

First of all, THE HUNTRESS OF GREENWOOD is still available. You can find it on Amazon.com in both paperback and Kindle versions, on Barnes & Noble.com in paperback and Nook versions, and on Smashwords for just about any E-format you can imagine.

Then there was one of the last issues of Pro Se Presents digest, where longtime writing pal Kevin Rodgers and I shared space. My first cover for the mag, featuring my debut detective series: THE KEENER EYE—The Web Of Life. Kevin's story 'Tomahawk Mountain' is a horror/mystery mash-up you don't want to miss! This one has done well, and you definitely want to check it out, available on Amazon as a paperback and Kindle format, On Barnes & Noble as a paperback, and on Smashwords as well. 

The latest project is also one I'm also very proud of! I was privileged to have my first story for Airship 27 accepted for their premiere anthology series SINBAD—The New Voyages. Yes, they are reviving the legendary Sinbad the Sailor with all new tales by some of the best writers in New Pulp today. Your's Truly was very fortunate to share space in this first issue with two extremely talented gentlemen, Derrick Ferguson and I.A. Watson. All the stories are done in the vein of the old Ray Harryhausen FX movies, which I have always loved. I'll tell you, this story was as much fun writing as anything I've ever done, and it spun right out of the keyboard. I'm looking forward to doing another.

There are three stories in there, each one having 3 interior illustrations for a total of 12 very detailed line drawings. Sinbad now has a multi-cultural cadre of companions who find themselves in all sorts of adventures and intrigue. I should have another Pro Se Presents story coming out soon, I'll let you know when that's available. Also the novel sequel to FORTUNE'S PAWN is due up soon, details on that as they come to me. 

I am gearing up for next year's writing as well, with most of the first anthology under the HANSEN'S WAY imprint written now. There should be two more anthos next year, and another novel, as well as several continuing short story serials for Pro Se Presents. And that's just all my Pro Se work!

Don't forget, I also edit for Pro Se, so I do things behind the scenes with smoke and mirrors even...

I'd also like to do more work for Airship 27, at least another Sinbad tale, and I might stick my toes in another story line.

Ya never know what else might come up. Most days it's just me and the evil keyboard, doing what we do best, spinning tales out of the ether.

We've Got News! 

First of all, long time contributor Roger Stegman is on the mend, though it has been very slow going. We hope to see him back in action here sometime soon. We miss you Roger!


Secondly: Our own Lee Houston Jr. now has his second book in print. That's right folks, another fine piece of work by Lee. This one is a superhero prose story, and it's long time labor of love, because Lee started working on this one back in his teens, and he just recently hit the half century mark. Yeah I know, I outed your age my dear friend, but I think it's an amazing story of dedication and determination to see a project through. I had the privilege of doing the editing on this one and I can tell you, it is pure dynamite. I'm not a big superhero fan, but I was enthralled with the characters and world backdrop Lee created. Additionally, I just finished my second pass of the book that will be the sequel to FORTUNE'S PAWN today and turned it over to Lee's capable hands for editing. When it comes back, I will make one final read through and send it off. That book will be announced later this year.


And... Lee and I will be on a local radio program for an interview late next month. My understanding is that the show will be taped and archived for a while, and it's available online. So as we get closer to that date, I will have more information up here for you.

And Your's Truly somehow got on the ballot for best author, which is a surprise and an honor, looking at the field of talent there with me. 


And I've neglected to mention (because I've been so darn busy) that both Lee and I have signed on to do New Pulp versions of old pulp stories reprinted by Altus Press http://www.altuspress.com/. This new collaboration between Pro Se and Altus is being titled PULP OBSCURA, because we are bringing back to life old pulp characters that never had more than a few stories written about them—with brand new tales in multi-author anthologies. The second Pro Se Presents magazine is out and it contains the first story of my brand new Silver Pentacle series. This one is a real departure for me because it is somewhat post apocalyptic superheroes meets time traveling demigod in a devastated earth where the fabric and time and space has been ripped apart and all sorts of interesting things are happening. Yeah, it's strange, but in an entertaining way. Plenty of action and mayhem, and some very interesting personages show up throughout the series. The most atypical fantasy thing I've ever written, and folks I've written my share of weird stuff. Go check it out because the artwork is superb, and there is another amazing story by a dynamic duo of authors in there that debuts a brand new pulp hero. Fortune's Pawn And The First Year With Pro Se Productions

I spent yesterday out shopping, and by the time I got back to the farm, it was pretty late in the day. No time for writing unfortunately, and I always feel guilty about that, even though authors also deserve a day off now and then. It had been a whirlwind trip out and about, and there was a lot of stuff to put away, including some thrifted items... So it was around dinnertime when I finally got online, only to be greeted by the wonderful news linked below. Made me smile and puff with pride, though I have to say I couldn't have done this without all the important folks behind the scenes. 


I have the honor not only of having the final book ppublished in the first calendar year that my company has been in business, but I also have our best selling title! With both feedback online and in person concurring, FORTUNE'S PAWN has been very well received. It's been reviewed on Amazon.com 3 times now, and is also for sale on Barnes & Noble online as well as Alibris (including a UK vendor) and an Italian bookselling site called Bol.It. All versions are in English at this time. I am sure I have missed some other sites that are listing it. 


All of our other current Pro Se NEW PULP offerings are being handled similarly, and believe me, they are well worth checking out if you love a good high action and adventure read in a book that won't give you a hernia to carry around.  We have all of the past year's magazines still available, as well as audiobooks and some E-versions for those with electronic devices. I have heard the audiobooks and they are amazing! Great stuff to listen to during a commute or when waiting somewhere, or just to sit and relax with your eyes closed.


So congratulations to all of the special folks at Pro Se Productions, for the fine work you do bringing author and reader together as well as hosting a creator's convention, the first one I've ever been invited to attend. And thank you for the opportunity to get my work out there where it can be read and enjoyed, as well as trusting me to edit one of your publications. My experience with this startup company has been very positive and I feel like part of a family.
