Year 15, Week 41, Day One (week 738)

Year 15, Week 41, Day One (week 738)
(January 17, 2000 was my first carving day.)
11-15-14 Saturday

68 degrees early morning, 84 degrees in the afternoon. Blue skies with puffs of clouds zipping across the sky. We got one band of dark bottom puffs that worried mom a little. I stayed with the forecast of the whole weekend being nice and it was. Periodic gusts of wind took away the heat without blowing things around. This Weather report is brought to you by the City Of Pompano Beach Department Of Tourism.

This morning was Yard Sailing again. I brought a whole bunch of stuff with me from my house. With the stuff I normally bring with me and stuff I need for doing the yard sale, it took two trips to get everything out to the truck.
Mom started setting up her stuff.  I went for breakfast while putting out the signs, and stopped at two yard sales while driving past two others. I saw nothing I could not live without.  One big advantage of doing a yard sale rather than hunting, is that I am not spending a whole lot of money for things. I don’t get much from my part of the yard sale but again, I am not spending.

Mom came up with a project during a yard sale lull. She had a plant that was looking quite sick. Much of the plant was already looking dead. A fungus showed up on the plant, likely injected by an insect that sucks on the sap, and the plant was just not doing well. I got my Saws-all out and first cut the plant near the roots. I then cut into the ground around it, freeing the roots so Mom could pull them out.
Using the hand cart, I brought one of her potted Norfolk Island Pine trees out front and we got it in place right where the other one was. It is a little shorter than the plant we pulled, which is about 6 feet tall with the pot. It looks good in that place.  Luckily, I was able to rest between steps and mom did the hardest part of the work.

Massive "tree" we cut down. as you can see, most of it was already dead.

My main project for the day was carving on my ornaments. I touched up the chimney ornaments I had in process already. I then went out back and made blanks for mice and chimney ornaments.
The previous time I used the bandsaw to make my mice ornaments, I cut way too deep. This time I sliced off only a little bit to give the impression of the shape. I left the ears thick figuring I can easily shape it exactly the way I want it when carving.
The chimney ornaments are cut to length, a cut going only part of the thickness of the blade is done on all four sides about mid way. This is the edge of the chimney. I then used the disk sander to smooth the sides and square the ends. The ends are squared by repeatedly rotating the piece, placing the end against the disk each time. When any angle is up and down, it squares the end.

Chimney ornament and mice ornament blanks with nearly finished example of each

A bit later, I sat down and started carving on the mice. They were easiest to do. I rounded the shape, all over and got the body and head close to where it was needed on all three blanks. Other than cutting the sides below the ears and the space between the ears, I left the ears alone. I will do the ears next time.
I then took on the chimney carvings. Other than the blank description given above, these are all by hand. There is not too much more that could be done with the bandsaw. I should make a 45 degree angle jig so I could put a stick or board on an angle to cut off a corner. That could allow me to remove two corners from the leg portion of the ornament and save me a little more time.
As I am carving these ornaments, they are getting easier to figure out what needs to be done and how to do it. I will have it exactly right and carve them efficiently and quickly. That, of course, will be when I stop carving them....
I am also developing callouses on my hand where the knife rests as I work. They will likely be perfect about the time I stop carving by hand....
As it is, I am getting back into the swing of carving. My results are coming out the way I want it.

I decided to try something I have never done before. When I make my crochet hooks, I use the Dremmel with a cutting disk to cut in the hook. Today, I took a bamboo rod and used my carving knife to make the hook. The technique is a whole lot different than with the Dremmel. With the Dremmel, I would come straight in and use the angle I am holding the cutting disk to make the slope and the hook. I work it side to side to make it even, but that is about it.
I had remembered that for most of the history of making crochet hooks, they did not have spinning cutting disks.
With the knife, I shaved down the slope of the hook first, and then had to work the sides of the hook. The Bamboo does not cut straight in on the ends of the grain nicely. I had to come in from the side and work the hook in by cutting wedges. Once I got it to where I wanted it, I used sandpaper to clean up the cuts and smooth everything out. I tested the hook out and it worked nicely. When I did a little bit of crochet, I forgot for a little bit that I was using the new hook to do some stitches.
It does take longer, but with a sharp knife, one can make a hook anywhere even without any power at all.

New Crochet hook. Rod is a chop stick I machined on a mini machine lathe to a working diameter. I then made the hook using my knife rather than the Dremmel

When the yard sale was over, we packed up everything and put everything back. Mom loaned me some bins and I ended up filling another bin of stuff. I was tired, and a slight be sore, but it was an excellent day. I was ahead of mom on sales (a few things went cheaper than they should have) until her last two sales, then she ended up with nearly four times what I had made. Considering most of my stuff is junk says something.
I have two places in my house where I need to move stuff to get to some items that would go well. I am not sure if I can do that this week. It would be nice to get to one of them at least.

I would like to work on my ornaments, but Mom has a couple projects in mind for tomorrow. One is where I take a couple of my wheeled baskets and use those wheels to replace the broken ones on one of Mom’s wagons. I have some other wheels that are smaller than on these baskets and I would put them on these baskets.
Another project is Mom’s sand pile. She is leveling out some low spots in her yard and using a lot of sand in the box. She wants to re-do the boards of the box, fixing them better. My idea is to screw blocks to the boards in the corner to hold them in place.

I will see what I actually do tomorrow.

Year 15, Week 41, Day Two (week 738)
(January 17, 2000 was my first carving day.)
11-16-14 Sunday

82 degrees around ten, 86 around two. Half blue sky and half puffs with some semi-towers over the Everglades. A nice breeze kept it comfortable.  This Weather report is brought to you by the City Of Pompano Beach Department Of Tourism.

Somehow I got an early start today. I set up my table and then started on a project I thought about all night. I dug out some old two by fours that were recovered when we had to hook up to a sewer system. I dug out my Saws-all and cut the three foot boards in half. I then got out Mom’s Forster bit set and drilled holes half way through the two inch thickness of the boards in two places. I got a drill, and drilled in the centers of the pockets. I pulled a fifty foot cord and screwed the blocks to the back board of the sand box.
The back board used to be an N gage model railroad layout and has a two by all the way around the edges to stiffen it. That gave me more to screw into. The pockets were because the screws I have would only have gotten a little bite into the wood. The pockets gave me the depth I needed to get a good bite and the holes I drilled made it easy to start with the bit going into the wood beyond directly.
Installing the two blocks in place on the back side required some high stepping and balancing on shifting wet sand. I used the shovel to try to pull the side tight and it did not move. I did a balancing act using my cane and shovel to get behind the side. I found out that I would need to move a foot of sand in order to move the side to where it needed to be.

I decided I was not going to shovel sand as my back would never take it, so I went back to my work table, got out my carving stuff. A glance at my work, I decided to paint everything that is close to being done.
I nearly emptied my carving basket out to get out the bottles of paints that were on the bottom. I selected a red and painted the pants on the two finished chimney carvings. I then painted all the sox and mittens red except at the cuffs which is supposed to be white.
After I decided all the paint was dry, I applied grey to the heals and toes of the sox. That made a big difference. It made them look like sox, not red boots or something else.
I then dug out some orange and painted the palms of the mittens so they would look less like boxing gloves. Not exactly the effect I was after but will work. If people decide they are boxing gloves, that is all right.

Sox and mittens painted by still requiring work.

I took a darker red and dry-brushed the surfaces of the bricks on the two completed Chimneys. Dry brushing is where you only have a little bit of paint on the brush and you drag it over the top surfaces of the texture so it the color does not go (or go much) into the deeper parts of the surface. The bricks are dark red and the mortar is wood colored.
I painted the boots. My black paint was watery and came out thinned so you can see the wood beneath the color. You can still see it is black, though.

chimney ornaments. The painted ones require loads of touch-up.

I took my other chimney carvings to the bandsaw. I started cutting light grooves into the surface of one and it was uneven as there was a slight angle to the face I was cutting.  I took them all to the disk sander and sanded each surface, squaring them and making sure they are straight. There is one where the wood broke off at the top of the chimney and that will have to be. I would have to spend too much time at the disk sander to get it down far enough for that to disappear.
With the chimneys square and smooth, I returned to the bandsaw and cut the horizontal grooves for the bricks. I laid each chimney on the side and held it to the blade for a moment. I guessed the thickness of the cap stones, and then went half way between that and the bottom and then half way between them so I ended up with four slots. I would tip the cut side up and then try to match the blade in the edge of the groove. On a couple, when I went all the way around, there was a slight error on the last edge. The knife can fix that.  I will later cut the vertical grooves between the bricks.
I have one blank I have not started carving yet. I considered cutting the bricks for that also, but realized It is best to decide which end will be carved for the legs after I examine it. Knots are best in the chimney, not in the legs where it is hard to cut.

After lunch, Mom decided to come out for a project. We had two choices. One is to replace the roof of her wishing well fountain which is deteriorating bad, or to tackle the sand box. Because I started on the sandbox already, we challenged the sandbox. We pulled the boards out. I used the saws-all to cut one side in half as it was too tall. I held the saws-all almost laying down with the blade against the edge and started cutting. The blade sliced in and I just drew the blade toward me and it cut quickly. I found that by tipping the saws-all slightly, I can guide the direction of the cut.
We had to do some digging (by mom, who placed the dug sand in the depression of the yard) and maneuvering to get the side where we wanted it. I tried screwing the side to the block from the outside. I was crouched down and my leg let me know it detested that position. My leg was not happy the rest of the day. We decided to put the wall to the inside of the block and learned that the back board was slightly bowed which made getting it screwed in place a challenge. We got screws in place on that end, then mom drove a stake deep in the ground at the other end and I screwed the side to the stake. We were both tired and decided to call that project done for now. We can do more next weekend.
We packed everything up, then sat and talked while recovering.

I got a lot done on a number of projects. The chimney carvings need clean up and then paint. The mice need the ears carved and corrections made on the body and head because of that. I plan to put in black beads in for eyes but that will be later. What I have on both sets of carvings is eight, once I carve the last blank I had made. I need to make four more of each to have my dozen of each set. On the stockings and mittens, I have to cut a whole bunch of wood into small pieces and then paint them different colors to represent presents to go into the open ends. I have two weekends to get all my ornaments ready for display / sale. As long as other projects don’t interfere, I think I can do it.

The weather will be the main factor in our plans for next weekend. If it is raining, the yard sales will be off. As long as it is not a driving rain, I will likely be in back under the awning and working. If the weather is nice for most of the day, we will do the yard sale again. I will work on carving and crochet, but not as much as I could.

I will have to see what I do next weekend.

Year 15, Week 40, Day One (week 737)

Year 15, Week 40, Day One (week 737)
(January 17, 2000 was my first carving day.)
11-08-14 Saturday

The weather was supposed to be questionable at best and likely bad. “I always wanted to be a weather man, but I was not accurate enough.......”
70s early morning, 84 late afternoon, milk and feathers high up, some clouds built to the west and then dashed off to the west, but there was no rain on radar at that time. A good breeze kept things cool. This weather report is brought to you by the City Of Pompano Beach Department Of Tourism.

It was another yard sale weekend. I saw a whole lot of signs out, but somehow I never even considered checking any of them out.

We got mom into position to start loading her tables when I headed for breakfast and to put the signs out.

When I got back, I set up my tables with my stuff. It was not until near the end of the day that Mom noticed something was missing from my display. About half an hour later, I found that I did not put out one of my bins. Here I had added more space to my display so it could have been shown.

I did some nibbling on some of my chimney ornaments. I was getting close to really detailing one when a slip of the knife lopped off the toe of the boot. I heard where it went but could not find it. I took another blank and cut into it where I knew wood would have to come out of about the size of the missing toe. I had to use the dremmel to free it. I then cut a piece off it and glued it where the missing toe was supposed to be and put a clamp it. I did a little more on another blank but set that to the side. One problem is that these have knots in them and the knots are hard to carve. There are times I would love to get a large piece of wood that hard, but not for carving.
Mom has a reindeer made out of cedar. The body sets in slots in the legs. The legs keep falling to the ground and breaking. Each time it breaks, it breaks at another place of fresh wood. It got dropped again so Mom asked me to put some pegs into it. I took it out back, glued it again, and clamped it. I intend to put dowels into it tomorrow so it won’t break.

During the early week, I had started another dish cloth. Mid week, my truck accidentally turned into the Joe Ann’s Cloth World parking lot. This is a chain of arts and crafts stores with about half the store devoted to sewing. The rest of the store is a good mixture of crafts.
Since I was there, I went in and checked a few isles. Six balls of yarn leaped on me and threatened to tie me up and hold me for ransom if I did not get them out of the store. Fifteen dollars later, I walked out with six giggling balls of yarn. I loved the bright colors of these.

New yarn I rescued from the store.

Near the end of the week, I basically finished a scarf I’ve been working on in the truck. Whenever I stop at a long light, I would grab it and do some stitches. It took me some time to work on it. The ball of yarn is something like 447 yards long (I started another scarf using that type of yarn) and I went until I reached the end of the yarn. I had four stitches left to do when the yarn finished up. Given a choice of adding a different yarn for the last, I chose to take them out. That left me about six to eight feet of yarn from the ball.

The six foot long scarf I worked on in the truck over many months.

During the yard sale, I wove in the tails of the yarn in the truck scarf, made a dishcloth from one of the new balls of yarn, which turned out to be the same yarn color as a previous dishcloth I made. I have two balls of that yarn that will each make another dish cloth. It just happened that the pattern matched my 27 stitch width. I have bands of color running up the dish cloth except for the last inch or so, where the color pattern shifted dramatically.  This one was strictly double crochet. The color is nice enough that it did not need a stitch pattern.

Two dish cloths. One on left finished that yarn. I had started it early in the week.
The second dish cloth is in new yarn. The color pattern is by pure luck, not due to plans. I noticed it only half way. the yarn pattern changed near the ends.

I then finished the dishcloth I started during the week. This was two single crochet, a double crochet, and a single crochet. That yarn ended having finished two dish cloths.

I started on a new scarf to work on in the truck. I got the chain done to the right length, and then started going into the chain with my base stitch. The yarn got tangled up inside the ball and would not come out. The tag said 447 yards. I had to ball it up from the outside with a long tail sticking out from the inside. It took some time. At first the ball was small and took time to take up much yarn. At the end, the ball was bigger than a soft ball. I got the base chain completed and got a few stitches in the second row so now I can work on it when I come to long stop lights.

I should have done a whole lot more carving during the day, but it just did not happen.

Tomorrow, I intend to drill the reindeer legs and put in dowels, and to work on the chimney ornaments some more.

Year 15, Week 40, Day Two (week 737)
(January 17, 2000 was my first carving day.)
11-09-14 Sunday

74 degrees in the afternoon.  A front is passing over us today. We got some early morning downpours of Liquid Sunshine (The Florida Department of Tourism declared it never rains in Florida. It is known as Liquid Sunshine).  It faded out and was medium and light the entire time I was at Mom’s house. A few bands early have passed but the main one is crossing the state. This weather report is brought to you by the City Of Pompano Beach Department Of Tourism.

I had to dodge drops as I set up my work table and get my equipment out. I sanded the repaired foot of the chimney carving I fixed yesterday so it would be even. I do have to do some filling on it. I am using white glue right now and see how it looks when done. Paint will hide it nicely.
I then took on the Reindeer decoration. I have a three foot long drill bit that is the right size for the skewers I am intending to use to reinforce the wood with. I first drilled with a smaller and shorter drill bit starter holes to help guide the long bit. I then mounted the three foot long drill bit into my drill. I started working carefully as there is a lot of play in a drill bit that long. I started to realize that the bit was dull as it was not going into the wood very well. I am not exactly sure what happened but it got away from me and the drill bit became badly bent and the wood almost took off before I got the drill shut off. There might be a way to straighten the drill bit. I sort of doubt it though. What I most likely will do is cut it into sections. The drill part of it is pretty much straight so I can cut that and use that separately. The rod can be used for other things, possibly made into a turning cutting tool.

Above the extension cord is the bent drill bit. Those are two by two pavers.

I then went to the drill press and found a drill-bit that if I barely grabbed it, would go across the breaks. I drilled through several places on each leg on both sides. I put dowels through only on one side of it as the glue I was using was kind of watery and I wanted to make sure it set properly. Next weekend, I will do the other side and put it out.
I tried to use my regular white glue and when I pulled on the red cap to allow it to pour, the whole stem broke. It appears to have glued itself nicely. I carved a wooden plug to fit the hole for now. I will try to remember to bring an old bottle of glue I have and mix them.   Either that or stop at the dollar store and get a new bottle and replace the one I broke. I will see how my schedule will go as to what I do.

 carved plug for glue bottle.

Next weekend will depend on the weather again. We would like to do another yard sale. I am trying to get stuff out of my house. Finding time to dig them out is the biggest problem.  I MUST work on ornaments. I don’t have many weekends to go before they must be ready. It is nice to be ahead of time, but still be better if they were done already, or at least finished with the rough carving so I could start painting.

I will see what happens next weekend.

Year 15, Week 39, Day One (week 736)

Year 15, Week 39, Day One (week 736)
(January 17, 2000 was my first carving day.)
11-01-14 Saturday

68 degrees early morning, 76 late afternoon high. blue skies early morning, patchy clouds zipped over head, sometimes blocking the sun, accompanied with strong gusts that got strong enough to move light stuff around in the afternoon. This weather report is brought to you by the City Of Pompano Beach Department of Tourism.

We were having a yard sale again. I got bins out front and then headed for breakfast. I stopped at a yard sale offered by the local MOOSE club. Ten, fifteen years ago, I would have grabbed up several things but I now have no use for those things.

This was a slow day. Mom made twice what I made, and I only sold buildings for model railroads. This was the fifth person interested in train stuff so far. One person was after a whole train set which I did not have. I did have some track but that was it.

I carved on two ornaments, both of the concept I had last weekend. I had discussed the concept with several people and they liked it. It is Santa’s legs sticking out of a chimney. My thought was that he is going in, but several people said that he was stuck. They will look really good with paint. That will make him really stand out.

During the week, I started a dish cloth using the post stitch. I alternated them, but kept them going all the way up. Mom likes it. The lines of posts gives the cloth a good scouring surface. She said it was the right size too.  I made this with the tooth brush crochet hooks I made. I started it with the one that bent right, and then when I could not locate that, I shifted to the one that bent left. They work fairly well. The secret is holding it just right to take advantage of the design.
Now I get to start a new dish cloth.

post stitch dishcloth. The pattern was pure accidental. I never even noticed it until I saw the picture.

My plan for tomorrow is to work on ornaments. It dawned on me that I have to get them all done before the end of this new month. The pressure is now on. Luckily for this year, Most years I am coming up with my first designs about now, not having four designs already being tested.

Year 15, Week 39, Day Two (week 736)
(January 17, 2000 was my first carving day.)
11-0-14 Sunday

52 degrees early morning. Since this is below the subtropical frost temperature of 56 degrees, the world was covered with frost. It was pretty.  It was 62 degrees at around ten, 69 degrees by about three. Blue skies and loads of sun. We are now on Standard Time again so while it does not change much today, it will make a big difference next weekend.
This weather report is brought to you by the City Of Pompano Beach Department of Tourism.

It was cold out this morning. It was cool inside. It made for a slow start this morning.

I got to Mom’s house and set up the work table. A bit later, I dragged it out into the sun so I could be warm. The wind took away a lot of the heat one might have.
I set up the Dremmel and got to work on the mittens and socks ornaments. These are to have little presents sticking out of them, so I used the Dremmel to create a pocket inside each one where the foot or hand would go. On the sox, I did a little carving to make the heal and toe stand out just a little. These don’t have a lot of carving to them so since I will be painting these a different color, I decided to make them stand out slightly just so they are more carved.

I cut four blanks for the chimney ornament. They have knots in them so carving them will be a bit of a challenge. What I did was to make them essentially twice as tall as they were wide, and then used the bandsaw to cut a groove around the piece at mid point. This is the top of the chimney. This helps get them square and located properly.
I used the disk sander to sand all surfaces flat and square.  For the ends, I would put it against the sanding disk, then rotate it and do it again. When the angle is up and down, the farthest point gets sanded back. Side to side speeds the process once I get the proper angle established. I end up with ends that are square to the side. On the sides, I will sand one side, then put that down and sand the next one. This makes them fairly square to each other.
I looked at what it would take to remove excess wood with the band saw and decided that working with the knife from scratch would be best, especially since I do not know what faces of the wood I would be working with because of the knots.
I made four blanks, and started carving on one of them. I have a long ways to go with that one.

chimney ornaments focusing was a little off for the distance.

chimney ornaments. focus still a little off for the distance.

I have eleven socks ornaments, twelve mitten ornaments, four “stool sample” ornaments (A joke for my doctor), five mice and two chimney ornaments. Most just need paint now, along with a bunch of presents that will go into them. Paint will really finish most of them up.

I have four more weekends to get all my ornaments done. That is going to take some work. Luckily, I am not starting from scratch, but have a good start on everything.

For next weekend, if the weather is good, we will do another yard sale. I will work on my ornaments and also on dish cloths. I doubt I will be painting on Saturday. That is a messy project. It is something best to do on a Sunday when things are calm and getting really messy is not a problem.

I will see what I actually do next weekend.
